Election Day Reprieve

Election Day Reprieve

Na-No-Wri-Mo Crest

In my last blog, I mentioned that I had been called for jury duty in Forsyth County District Court on, of all days, November 8.
I’m not one to shirk my civic responsibility, but come on! Who wants jury duty on Election Day? Besides, it’s eight days into National Novel Writing Month and I really need to spend the day increasing my word count, so that I can reach my goal of 50,000..

I stewed about it all day long. Finally 5:00 o’clock arrived. It was time to check the website where the clerk of court would post the numbers of the jurors who would be required to report to the Hall of Justice promptly at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, and remain there until 5:00 o’clock. Jury service would be good for one day or one trial.

Oh, gosh! What if I actually got picked for a trial and it lasted for days? I’m scheduled to be on grandmother duty Friday, and there’s no way I could let my kids and my grandkids down.

You can’t imagine my glee when I clicked open the website and read the following:

Just wanted you to know how the suspense over jury duty ended. Now, I’m going to get my second cup of coffee and settle down to work on my Na-No-Wri-Mo novel. Instead of the usual background writing music, I’ll turn on CNN and keep one ear tuned for election news. I’m praying that wisdom prevails at the polls today.

If you haven’t done so already, GO OUT AND VOTE!
