Retirement___A_Journ_Cover_for_Kindle (533x800)

After retiring from my position as a middle school principal in 2011, I took a whole year to chronicle my life journey thus far and to plot a course for the road that lay ahead.

The fruit of my labor is a memoir, which I self-published in 2013, under the title Retirement:  A Journey not a Destination.

My purpose is not to detail here what a valuable experience that year of self-examination turned out to be. It’s all there in the book. You can preview it or read it for yourself on Amazon. It comes in Kindle or paperback.  https://amzn.to/2M4hMPB

Instead, I plan to use the next few posts to tell you about how I navigated through the independent publishing process and came up with a finished product, for less than $100.

After that, I’ll share my plans to publish my first novel.

Hattie’s Place is a coming of age story, set in rural Pickens County, South Carolina, in 1907, and exploring the nuances of love, friendship, and loyalty. It really is a sweet and tender tale, and I can’t wait to tell you about it.

But I need to tell you about my foray into the world of self-publising first, because that’s what gave me the self-confidence to try my hand at fiction.

And I’m guessing that if you’re following this blog, you could be an aspiring writer who suffers like I do from a reluctance to put your work out there for the world to see.

I love this quote from Erica Jong and wish I’d thought to say it this way:

I went for years not finishing anything, because of course, when you finish something you can be judged.
