Kid Power Bands: A Way for Children to Keep Fit and Help Others

I discovered these UNICEF Kid Power Bands and bought them for five of my grandchildren for Christmas. The kids loved them and instantly began to compete with one another for the most steps.

The whole time they were together at our house, they would run around the house once or twice, check their progress, and compare numbers. Then, the one with the lowest number would take off running again. In less than an hour, their numbers were registering in the thousands. Harry told me that Henry racked up 22,000 steps one day last week. I don’t know about you, but I have to work mighty hard just to get my 10,000 steps a day on Fitbit.

When I passed the word to some of my friends who are also grandparents, they were anxious to know how to purchase the bands. I’m including the description of the UNICEF Kid Power Program and the contact information below. It’s a great gift that helps kids monitor their own physical activity and raise their awareness about world hunger. At the same time, it gives them a concrete way to impact the problem. I guess this gift appealed to me because I’ve always loved the idea of multiple and integrated solutions–ways to “Kill two birds with one stone.”

The United Nations has set a goal to bring an end to World Hunger by 2030. That is a worthy, but ambitious undertaking. Just think, if we can channel the boundless energy of our youth into helping us solve this grave social issue, we might actually accomplish the goal. And, in the process, our grandchildren will grow into adults with strong bodies and strong social consciousness–adults with a world view similar to that expressed by Franklin D. Roosevelt:

The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.

I really don’t like the idiom of killing birds–maybe if you substituted squirrels it would be better. Just kidding. I wouldn’t kill them either. Nonetheless, this really would be a way to bag a few–metaphorically, of course.
